Greening Our Christmas

City of Sydney is committed to a sustainable Sydney, and this is particularly relevant in the Christmas season.

The City is addressing sustainability during the season in the following ways:

  • The City will be reducing power by using LED lighting and by turning off all the City Christmas Trees lights between 2am and 6am, saving two tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • City streets will be cleaned using recycled water collected from the City’s rainwater tanks, recycling plants and pits.
  • Rubbish and street litter collected from City events will be recycled where possible.
  • The City is calling on Sydneysiders and visitors to use bins provided at Christmas events or to take rubbish home.
  • The City’s Christmas decorations are reused.
  • The City’s Living Colour plant displays are given away or turned into mulch which is used in the City’s parks.
  • The City’s carol booklets are printed on 100 percent recycled paper and the City now produces an online Christmas card.
  • Our Christmas show bags handed out at each Christmas Concert are made from recycled City banners.
  • The City has entered its third year of being carbon neutral. We became Australia’s first carbon neutral local government by a detailed process to measure our greenhouse gas emissions from use of electricity and other energy sources.
